FUNCTION, FOOD SOURCES & DEFICIENCY OF SELENIUM

Function: Plays critical roles in reproduction, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and protects from oxidative damage and infection.

Food sources: seafoods, and organ meats, muscle meats, cereals, breads, grains, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs.

Deficiency: Selenium deficiency can cause Keshan disease (a type of heart disease) and male infertility. It might also cause Kashin-Beck disease, a type of arthritis that produces pain, swelling, and loss of motion in your joints.
